William Howarth was born in Manchester. A Carter by occupation, he attested for the Manchester Regiment on 23 June 1893. With the regiment he served in India, February 1895-November 1897; Malta, December 1897-February 1898; Gibraltar, February 1898-August 1899, and South Africa, August 1899-August 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1902 and discharged, having completed his period of service, on 22 June 1905. Additionally awarded the King’s medal with two clasps. With copied service papers and roll extract.
