William Ernest Chamberlain was born in Norwood, London. A Bottle Washer by occupation, he attested for the Devonshire Regiment at London on 19 August 1895, aged 19 years, 8 months. With the regiment he served in India, September 1896-September 1899 and was awarded the I.G.S. 1895 with clasp for ‘Punjab Frontier 1897-98’. He then served in South Africa, September 1899-January 1902 and in India, January 1902-March 1903.

Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1903, he was discharged in August 1907. Additionally awarded the King’s medal with two clasps. With copied service papers and roll extract.
