Joseph Smith was born, lived and enlisted at Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire. Serving with the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 28 October 1914, aged 31 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. His name is also commemorated on the Collingbourne Kingston Village War Memorial, School War Memorial and Church War Memorial. He was the son of Mrs Ann Choules, of Aughton, Collingbourne Kingston.
