A Great War M.C. and Bar group of five awarded to Colonel A. S. S. Herbert, 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade

Military Cross, G.V.R., with Second Award Bar, the reverse inscribed ‘2/Lt., Rifle Bde.’; British War and Victory Medals (Capt.) these probably later issues; Defence & War Medals (Colonel, M.C.) Nearly extremely fine (5) £400-500

M.C. London Gazette 11 December 1916: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He rallied his men under intense fire, displaying great courage and initiative. Later, although wounded, he remained at his post until he had reorganised the defence of the position.’

Bar to M.C.
London Gazette 1 February 1919: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of his company near Eterpigny on 30th August, 1918, and in the attack on the Drocourt-Queant line on 2nd September, 1918. On both these occasions he commanded his company with marked ability and entire disregard for his own personal safety. On the latter occasion he was wounded early in the morning but carried on until the afternoon, by which time he had consolidated the line. He showed courage and determination under continuous and accurate machine-gun fire.’
