Thomas Mawe Luke was born in 1872. Joining the Royal Artillery in 1892, he became a Lieutenant in 1895. He served on the North West Frontier of India with the Tirah Expeditionary Force 1897-98 and was promoted Captain in 1900. He then served in the Tibet Campaign 1904-4, for which he was mentioned in despatches and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 16.12.1904). Further service followed on the N.W. Frontier and he was promoted Major in 1913. In the Great War he served as D.A.A.G., A.A.G. and D.A.G., and during 1916-19 served as Director of Administration G.H.Q., India with the rank of Brigadier-General. He was given the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1915 and was promoted to that rank in 1917. In the Afghan War of 1919, Lieutenant-Colonel Luke was C.R.A. of the Kohat Kurran Force from June to September 1919. For his services in these wars he was awarded the O.B.E. in 1918 and C.B.E. in 1919.
