James Arthur Gayer was born on 26 August 1832 at Kinnecad, Co. Limerick, and was educated at Cheltenham College. He was commissioned an Ensign in the Bombay Army on 10 December 1850, after previously serving as a volunteer in the Indian Navy. Appointed to the 2nd Bombay European Regiment on 6 February 1852, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 29 March 1856. With them he served in the Persian Expeditionary Force of 1856-57, being present at the assault and capture of Reshire, the surrender of Bushire, with the expedition to Borazjoon and at the action at Khooshab. Returning to India in the latter part of 1857, he served with the Field Force under Brigadier-General Le Grand Jacob at the assault and capture of Kolapore on 6 December 1857. Granted the Brevet of Captain in the Bombay Staff Corps in December 1862, he was promoted Captain on 4 December 1865. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 10 December 1876. Lieutenant-Colonel Gayer died at Southampton on 11 June 1878. Sold with copied research.
