Mjr., R.A.S.C.); Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, 1 clasp, Khartoum (3315 Pte., 21st Lrs.), the first with slack suspension, contact marks and edge bruising, generally nearly very fine and better (7) £1800-2000

John Clayton was advanced to Lance-Corporal in November 1898, shortly after having participated in the charge at Omdurman as a member of ‘A’ Squadron, 21st Lancers. He subsequently witnessed further action in the Great War with the Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport), first entering the French theatre of war on 13 August 1914, and was awarded the M.S.M. ‘In recognition of valuable service rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders’ while serving in 17th M.T. Company (London Gazette 3 June 1919 refers). Finally, he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in October 1921.
