Walter Clifford King, a pre-war employee of the G.P.O., enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in January 1917. Appointed a Wireless Operator in the rank of Air Mechanic 2nd Class, he was wounded in France on 10 December 1917 and admitted to No. 55 General Hospital in Boulogne - a few days later he was evacuated to the U.K. and admittted to hospital in Glasgow. Sent on furlough on being discharged from the latter establishment in March 1918, he returned to duty at No. 1 Wireless School that May. King was placed on the R.A.F. Reserve in March 1919.
