Re-enlisting in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as an Aircraftman 2nd Class in October 1938, he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Administrative and General Duties Branch in August 1940, in which capacity he served until the end of the War, gaining advancement to war substantive Flight Lieutenant in January 1944.
