Francis McNally was born in Birkenhead on 7 April 1874. A Seaman by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy in 1892. He served aboard various vessels until 1899 when he was ‘put ashore’ by purchase. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport in 1902, serving during the Great War mostly on destroyers and cruisers. While serving aboard the Aurora in January 1894, he rescued one of his shipmates from the sea and was awarded a privately produced life saving medal. Sold with copied service paper and other research.
