John Sheppard was born in Southampton in June 1856 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1872. A Stoker by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (March 1881 to November 1882), he appears to have been pensioned ashore as a Leading Stoker in the mid-1890s
