Martin received his Medal from Queen Victoria at Windsor on 21 November 1882, one of 16 fellow members of crew so honoured.

William Martin was born in Romsey, Hampshire in January 1854 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1869. An Able Seaman by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (May 1882 to September 1885), he transferred to the Coast Guard in October of the latter year, and was invalided ashore as a Commissioned Boatman ‘from Melville Hospital’ in May 1891; sold with a file of research, including copied service record.
