Charles Walter Nichols was born in Brompton, London on 13 February 1878. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 2 October 1899 being confirmed in his rank in January 1901. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in October 1902 on Wildfire; E.R.A. 2nd Class in October 1906 on Aboukir and C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in June 1911 at Pembroke I. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in October 1914 when based on the depot ship Dido. For most of the Great War he served with the Dover Patrol on board the destroyer leader Faulknor, August 1914-May 1918. Pensioned 16 October 1921.
