‘Alfred Charles, fisherman, and R.S.P.C.A. Inspector L. S. Lesmere, for saving a terrier 300 feet down the face of White Nose, near Lulworth [Dorset].’

Alfred Charles was born in Wareham, Dorset on 14 May 1887. A Farm Carter by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 11 July 1904, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in October 1904. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in May 1905 when on
Mars and to Able Seaman in December 1906 when on Theseus. Served on the Duke of Edinburgh, March 1914-April 1916. Later served on Rifleman from October 1916 until his demobilisation on 22 May 1919.
