On 11 November 1914, the torpedo gunboat H.M.S. Niger was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off Deal Pier. No lives were lost; the ship’s company being taken off by the Deal and Kingsdown lifeboats and nearby beach boats. The Annie was one such beach boat. The medal is referred to in L.S.A.R.S. Journal No. 17, p.18-20. With newspaper clipping re. the sinking and rescue and a copied photograph of the Niger.
