Herbert James Beard was born in London on 20 October 1879. A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment in August 1915, and served in Bermuda, England and France, gaining appointment as an Hon. Captain in May 1916. Having afterwards served in the Canadian Army Pay Corps, he was placed on the Retired List in 1935, but rejoined the C.A.P.C. on the renewal of hostilities and was awarded the M.B.E. (London Gazette 2 June 1943 refers), before being placed back on the Retired List, owing to his age, as a Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1943. Also awarded the Defence & War Medals, and C.V.S.M. with clasp, in addition to his Great War awards, he died in Victoria, B.C., in April 1967; sold with a quantity of copied service papers.
