Bolton Castle was built in the late 14th century by Richard le Scrope, 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton. A massive fortress with walls 9 feet thick, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there in 1568-9 and a party of Royalists was starved into submission over a period of 15 months during the Civil War. For much of the 18th century it was a ruin, eventually inherited though marriage by Thomas Orde-Powlett (1746-1807), who was created Baron Bolton of Bolton Castle on 20 October 1797
