Dudley Castle is a ruin with origins said to date to the 8th century. A royalist garrison was besieged there in the Civil War and severe damage was done to the infrastructure by a major fire which started on 24 July 1750 and burned for two days; the fire was caused by coin counterfeiters working in the dungeons
