Dudley, Edward Davies, Skidmore’s Penny, 1797, view of the ruined chapel of Dudley Castle, rev. from the same die as previous, edge i promise to pay on demand the bearer one penny, 20.27g/6h (DH 4). Extremely fine with much original colour, especially on obverse, rare (£120-150)

Dudley Castle is a ruin with origins said to date to the 8th century. A royalist garrison was besieged there in the Civil War and severe damage was done to the infrastructure by a major fire which started on 24 July 1750 and burned for two days; the fire was caused by coin counterfeiters working in the dungeons
