Coventry, Kempson’s Penny or medal, elevation of St Michael’s Church, rev. interior of the Chancel, edge plain, 27.04g/6h (DH 38a). Usual light die flaw on upper left side of obverse, otherwise extremely fine and bronzed, rare (£150-180)

Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.

St Michael’s dated to the 15th century; its spire, over 300 feet high, was one of the finest in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest parish church in England. Designated a Cathedral after a revision of the diocese in 1918, it was famously bombed virtually to destruction in a Luftwaffe raid on 14 November 1940 and only the roofless shell remains today
