First only illustrated. Bath Abbey dates from the 8th century and was wrested from the bishop of Worcester by King Offa, who had the edifice rebuilt; in the later Middle Ages it was in a parlous state and not restored to its former health until the 17th century. The present Guildhall, the work of the architect Thomas Baldwin, was built in 1776 and houses one of the finest Adam-style interiors in England. There is no record of the King visiting Bath on 10 September 1789, the date shown on the third item
