Dudmaston Hall, 3 miles south-east of Bridgenorth, built in the late 17th century on land owned by the Wolryche-Whitmore family, was given to the National Trust in 1978. Among its most famous residents were the mathematician and ‘father of computing’ Charles Babbage (1791-1871), who married Georgiana Wolryche-Whitmore in 1814, and Rachel, Lady Labouchere (1908-96), a direct descendant of the Coalbrookdale industrialist Abraham Darby
