Kempson’s Admiral Gardner Election token, 1796, Gardner in naval uniform standing in front of a cannon, rev. obelisk at left, fox standing on three blocks, no majesty but that of the people, etc, 21.84g/6h (DH 226; BHM 411). Extremely fine with virtually full original colour (£70-90)

Alan, Lord Gardner (1742-1809) served in the navy from 1756 to 1782, sat on the board of the Admiralty and was elected MP for Plymouth in 1790. In 1796, polling 4,814 votes, he was returned as one of the MPs for Westminster. In 1800 he was created an Irish peer and in 1807 succeeded Earl St Vincent in the command of the Channel fleet
