The Gloucester & Berkeley Canal Co, formed in 1793, had planned to construct a canal, almost 18 miles in length, from the Severn estuary at Berkeley Pill to Gloucester, where a large dock area was to be built. Construction began at Gloucester in 1794, but only five miles of the waterway had been cut by the time capital was exhausted in 1799. Work was restarted in 1818 with the southern terminus changed to Sharpness, but the project was only completed in 1827. Sold with much further background information
