Beeston Castle, built by Ranulf, 6th Earl of Chester in the mid-1220s, passed into the hands of Henry III in 1237. It was largely demolished in 1646, subsequent to the Civil War, during which its Royalist garrison was subjected to a lengthy siege by Parliamentarian troops. A tourist attraction since the 1840s, it is now administered by English Heritage
