Belfast, North-East Agricultural Association of Ireland, a silver award medal by Jarrett, London, Hibernia seated on plinth, kneeling figures at left and right, bee-hive and other implements of agriculture around, rev. wreathes of wheat, hand at top, named (Show 1857, Farmers Class, Robert Shaw, Ballymechan), edge impressed (Best of all the Prize Cows), 45mm. Several rim nicks and scrapes on edge, otherwise very fine, an early award (£80-100)

The North-East Agricultural Association of Ireland was formed in 1854, following the Great Famine and a desire to improve agriculture. The Society embraced the counties of Down, Antrim, Armagh and Monaghan by holding agricultural shows and giving agricultural instruction. It became the Ulster Agricultural Society in 1903 and subsequently the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society by command of Edward VII (see lot 1014)
