British Provincial, Norfolk, Norwich, Norwich & Norfolk Bank, Five Pounds, 19 January 1858, G 3326, for Gurneys & Birkbecks, signed by William Birkbeck (Outing 1603; Grant 2139L). Stamped CANCELLED twice across back, ragged left edge, otherwise good fine, rare £500-600

The bank was started by John and Henry Gurney in Norwich in 1770. The Gurneys were to become one of the great British banking families of the 19th century before joining with others to form Barclays in 1896
