Unattributed, BRAZIL, Maria I and Peter III, 6.400 Réis, 1784, Rio, obv. countermarked with raised g within a dentilated circular indent, 14.27g/220.2 gr/9.17 dwt (Gordon 217). Coin very fine, countermark better £1,000-1,500

Provenance: Bt R.C. Gordon.

Zay attributed this countermark to the Guadeloupe decree of April 1803, but he was in error as that order concerned false plugs in circulating joes. Further research is required, but Gordon offers the possibility that this mark is a modern concoction and the cataloguer would concur
