Regimental muster rolls reveal that John McSweeney was located at camps Budnee and Phurawala from October 1845 to March 1846, and at camps Koorawah, Kaderabad and Tonkee between July 1848 and March 1849, thereby making him a probable recipient of the Sutlej and Punjab Medals. He disappears from the musters in the period October 1856 to March 1857, either as a result of being discharged, or having died in service.
