Herbert Joseph Bowles was born at Clerkenwell, London in April 1877 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1897. A Mechanician by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he served for virtually the entire War aboard H.M.S. Dreadnought, the revolutionary “all big gun” battleship and the first large warship to be propelled by turbines. Bowles was demobilised in April 1919.
