Henry Taverner was born at Stonehouse, Devon in November 1844 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1859. Advanced to Domestic 1st Class in April 1874, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in June of the following year and went on to witness active service aboard H.M.S. Alexandra, the flagship of Admiral Sir Frederick Seymour, K.C.B., off Egypt in 1882. At the time of the bombardment of Alexandria that July, however, he appears to have been on detachment to the Helicon. Taverner was finally pensioned ashore in March 1883.
