Sold with original commission as First Lieutenant, Royal Artillery, dated 19 July 1854, and original Foreign Office pass for Lieutenant Hamilton ‘of the Royal Artillery (British Subject) - going to Corfu, via Trieste, - to join his Company’, dated 26 August 1854.

Augustus Henry Carr Hamilton was born in Dublin on 14 July 1834, and entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Artillery, on 11 April 1854, aged 19 years 9 months. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in July 1854 and proceeded to Corfu in August 1854, where he served until December 1856. He served with 4 Battery, 12 Brigade, R.A., in China from April 1857 until November 1858, including the capture of Canton (Medal with clasp). Hamilton became 2nd Captain in April 1860 and Captain in May 1870.
