George Johnston, who was born in Glasgow in 1896, was appointed a Temporary Midshipman in December 1915 and joined the armed merchant cruiser Himalaya in April 1916, in which capacity he remained actively employed until July 1918. Thus his part in operations ashore in October 1916, when landed at Kilwa Kisiwani, Tanganyika, under Major Bliss - operations undertaken with the 2nd West Indies Regiment. Having then served at Attentive II, additional for H.M.S. Gypsy, in the closing months of the War, he was demobilised in October 1919. He died at Singapore in July 1922; sold with further details.
