At the outbreak of war the 2nd Dragoons were stationed at York. They entered France on 17 August 1914 as part of the 5th Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division.

Corporal David Bertram, 2nd Dragoons, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 17 August 1914. He transferred to the Royal Scots in December 1916 and attained the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2.
