James M. Forsyth was born in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, lived in Wishaw, Lanarkshire and enlisted at Dunoon, Argyllshire. Serving in the 12th (Service) Battalion Highland Light Infantry, he entered France on 11 July 1915. He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of Loos, 25 September 1915, aged 21 years. At Loos the battalion formed part of the 46th Brigade; their main objective was the Loos Road Redoubt via the Southern Sap and then the town of Loos itself; beyond Loos was Hill 70 and Cite St. Auguste. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. He was one of 560 casualties to the battalion.
