James Henry Edwards was born in Penzance, Cornwall, on 24 February 1845. A mason by trade he joined the Royal Navy as a stoker on 21 February 1871. He served aboard H.M.S.
Hart from January 1874 until May 1877, during which period he took part in the Perak operations on the Malay Peninsula. He volunteered for a further 10 years Continuous Service in February 1881, and was finally ‘shore pensioned’ on 9 March 1891.
