Michael Henson Connell was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in June 1858, aged 20 years, having previously served in the Galway County Militia. In his subsequent career of 22 years with the Colours, his overseas postings included duty in North America between December 1861 and May 1868, which period witnessed his services in the Fenian troubles of 1866. He had meanwhile been advanced to Corporal in October 1867, and was further promoted to Sergeant in November 1872 and to Colour-Sergeant in April 1875.
