Colwyn William Vulliamy obtained an Ensigncy in the 17th Regiment in September 1865. He subsequently witnessed active service in the Second Afghan War 1878-80, when he was present at the capture of Ali Musjid and served in the 1st and 2nd Bazar Valley expeditions, in addition to the operations at Chenar and the actions at Kabul River and Maidanack.

Vulliamy subsequently rose to the command of the 1st Battalion and was placed on the Retired List as a Lieutenant-Colonel at the end of the 1890s; his cousin was the author Colwyn Edward Vulliamy (1886-1971).
