Thomas Sims was born at East Meon, near Petersfield, Hampshire, and attested for the 67th Regiment at Nursted on 8 January 1839. He volunteered to the 45th Regiment in April 1842 and served abroad at Gibraltar, 1 year 9 months, at Monte Videao, 10 months, and at the Cape of Good Hope, 12 years 7 months. He was tried by a Detachment Court Martial at Waterloo Bay on the 14th January 1847, ‘for having when on Sentry, forced open, or connived at the forcing open, of the door of the Commissariat Stores, 2ndly allowing Private Browne to pass his post with goods he knew to have been illegally obtained - Found guilty of both charges & sentenced to 50 lashes - Inflicted - He is also in possession of a Kaffir War Medal for 1846-7 & 1853.’ Sold with copy discharge papers.
