Recommendation states: ‘Aged 50 years. Throughout the period May to Aug. 1944 and indeed all through the Italian campaigns, Sjt. Davies has maintained the highest standard of personal courage and devotion to duty under all circumstances. His example has been a great inspiration to all troops. At Monte Kitro, Attessa, Perano, Archi, Coldari and on the Ortona-Orsogna lateral road, he controlled evacuation of casualties through Aid Points and saved many lives. By his first aid skill, often under heavy fire, he again distinguished himself during the battle for the crossing of the R. Cari (?). At Piedmonte when 19 Bde. H.Q. was being “stonked” and casualties occured this NCO led stretcher bearers forward and despite continued shelling, successfully rendered 1st Aid and evacuated the wounded. Despite his age of 50 years, Sjt. Davies under the most adverse conditions and shell fire encountered in forward areas, has consistently displayed an exceptionally high order of gallantry and leadership. His constant, prompt and fearless devotion to duty has without doubt saved the lives of many seriously wounded soldiers’.
