Robert William Henry Jackson was born on 1 August 1864, the son of Deputy Surgeon General Sir Robert W. Jackson. He qualified s a B.A., M.B., D.P.H. at Dublin, 1887 and a M.D. in 1892. He entered the Army Medical Department as a Surgeon, afterwards, Surgeon-Captain in July 1890 and was promoted to Major in July 1902. He was on plague duty in India, 1899-1900, and on the termination of his employment, the Government of Bombay, by resolution dated 1 March 1900, stated, ‘Government has much pleasure in acknowledging the excellent work done by this officer’. He then served in South Africa, in operations in Transvaal and the Orange River Colony, Movember 1901-May 1902. Placed on Retired Pay in July 1910, he was employed when on the Retired List at Lichfield, 1911 and Weymouth, 1913.
