John William Beatty was born in Dublin on 15 June 1857 and qualified as a M.D. at the R.U.I. He entered the Army Medical Department as a Surgeon, afterwards Surgeon-Captain in July 1881 and was promoted to Surgeon-Major, afterwards Major, in the R.A.M.C. in July 1893. Beatty saw service in the Egypt campaign of 1882 and the Ashanti expedition of 1895-96. He was placed on Retired Pay on 14 June 1899.
