Henry James Sylvester was born on 25 December 1810. He was appointed Apothecary on 25 March 1870; Lieutenant of Orderlies on 25 January 1873 and promoted to Captain of Orderlies on 27 January 1879. He served throughout the Zulu War as District Officer of Orderlies, Acting Adjutant and Quartermaster, Army Hospital Corps. Promoted to Quartermaster, Army Medical Service on 1 July 1881, he retired with the honorary rank of Major on 1 March 1887.
