Robert McWharrie (spelt ‘Macquarrie’ up to and including his time at university) was born on 29 October 1819 and gained his medical degree at St. Andrew’s in 1841. He was appointed a Staff Assistant Surgeon on 11 March 1842, Staff Surgeon 2nd Class in November 1853, Surgeon-Major in March 1862 and retired with the honorary rank of Deputy Inspector-General on 26 June 1867. He died at Toftcombs, Biggar on 28 August 1899.
