South Africa 1834-53 (Surgn. John Murtagh, M.D., 6th Regt.) nearly extremely fine £380-420

John Murtagh qualified as a M.D. at Edinburgh in 1826. Appointed a Hospital Assistant on 5 December 1826, he became an Assistant Surgeon with the 6th Foot in 1830. Appointed Staff Surgeon on 2 July 1841, he was transferred to the 6th Foot in 1843. With them he served in the Second and Third Kaffir Wars. Placed on Half Pay in 1852, he died on 17 November 1880.
