James Harrison was born on 13 March 1820. He gained the M.D. at Edinburgh in 1841 and became a M.R.C.S. in 1842 and was appointed a F.R.C.S. in 1861. He entered the Indian Medical Service as an Assistant Surgeon on 5 April 1842, Surgeon on 6 September 1856 and Surgeon Major on 5 April 1862. He died in Uxbridge on 26 October 1862. He served in the First Sikh War at Ferozeshuhur and in the Second at Mooltan, Sadullapur, Chilianwala and Goojerat. Harrison was the author of the book, Origin and Progress of the Bengal Medical College published in 1857.
