Stephen Macmullen was born on 22 January 1775 and began his medical career as a regimental Mate on 24 August 1794, becoming a Hospital Mate in July the following year. He was appointed as Assistant Surgeon to the 59th Foot on 25 June 1797, and as Surgeon to the same regiment two years later, serving with them during the suppression of the revolt by Velu Thampi in Travancore in 1809, and at the capture of Java in 1811. He was appointed to the Staff in November 1813 and retired on half pay in February 1815. Continuing his medical studies, he qualified M.D. at St Andrew’s in 1815 and as F.R.C.S. at Edinburgh in 1820. Doctor Macmullen died on 11 June 1848.
