D.C.M. London Gazette 14 January 1916, citation published London Gazette 11 March 1916:
‘For conspicuous gallantry. When in full view of the enemy he dragged a wounded man to a place of safety, and remained with him for seventeen hours in a shell hole, tending his wounds under fire.’


Arthur H. S. Hale initially served during the Great War with the 1/1st (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) in the French theatre of war from 6 January 1915. He subsequently transferred to the 1/3rd (City of London) Battalion, and then to the Royal Engineers.
