Frederick Nind Woodall was appointed Ensign in the 74th Foot on 24 March 1854, and promoted to Lieutenant on 15 December 1854. He was appointed Lieutenant Instructor at the School of Musketry at Hythe on 10 February 1866, was promoted to Captain on 1 April 1874 and placed on half-pay the following week. He joined the Army Pay Department as a Paymaster on 24 December 1878, advancing to Staff Paymaster, with Hon rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, on 15 June 1885. He served with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 attached to the 1st Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (mentioned in despatches, promoted Staff Paymaster, Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star); also took part in the operations of the Egyptian Frontier Field Force in 1885-86.
