James Hopkins was born in Christchurh, Surrey, in 1811, and by 1851 was running a Tobacco Warehouse in Lambeth at the 95 Lower Marsh address on this note. The business continued at the same address until at least 1901, although by then it was run by his daughter, Eliza, as a general stationer. James Hopkins died in 1903, at the fairly remarkable age of 92.
