William Ward was one of a family of Liverpool hatters. His father and son were both in the business and indeed, he was in partnership with his son, who was based in London, when this note was produced in 1833. The partnership did not last long and was dissolved a year later.

The engraver of the note, Edgar Andrew Porteus, is notable for having had an injunction taken out against him by Guinness & Co., because he was engraving labels that were suspiciously similar to their beer bottles!
